ND 22 Killdeer Roundabout

The Killdeer Roundabout is located on the intersection of North Dakota Hwy 22 and Hwy 200. A roundabout is a circular intersection, which allows drivers to travel counterclockwise around a center island. When entering a roundabout, drivers must yield to traffic inside the roundabout. Exits made in this type of intersection are always done to the right.

One of the main reasons for utilizing a roundabout intersection is that it will help cause less traffic congestion. However, there are several other benefits that result from using this type of intersection. These benefits include; elimination of high speed crashes, improved traffic flow, increased traffic capacity and the ability to accommodate vehicles of all sizes. Increased safety for travelers is a result of all of these benefits.

There are 32 points of conflict in a traditional 4-way stop intersection. Roundabout intersections contain only 8 points of conflict. For this reason, roundabouts have 40% fewer vehicle collisions, 80% fewer injuries, and 90% fewer serious injuries and fatalities, according to a national study of roundabouts in the United States.

The roundabout located on the intersection of North Dakota Highway 22 and Highway 200 is the first roundabout located on a North Dakota state highway and will facilitate the current influx of traffic as well as long-term traffic increases.
